Experience Post Grendel Menz

I went to the lunchtime lecture with Lily May and learned a lot about the more professional and business sides of art. I thought it was interesting that Lily said that if you have the skill and the drive, art school might not necessarily be very helpful to you. It was interesting because I have never really heard someone say that but if you are really dedicated and are looking for agents and clients actively like she does, it makes sense that you wouldn't need to go to art school. I also learned about the whole agents situation because I had never really thought about artists having agents but it makes being an artist for a career or side job sound more feasible because you can so easily email a ton of people and find someone who works for you. Even if only one person gets back to you, you only really need one. I also likes that she was upfront about the fact that she is constantly looking for agents and emails a lot of people - some of which never even get back to her despite the fact that she is a successful artist. I also didn't realize that digital prints were such a big thing. I always thought that if someone commissioned paper work (not digital) that you would send them the original so I was kind of surprised when Lily said she most times would send them a print or a high quality digital file. But overall, I really lover her illustrations, the colors she uses just make them seem like they are glowing. The pen also looks like its a brush pen which I think adds a lot of dynamic line quality and texture. I also used to like doing ink and watercolor drawings so it was cool to see someone doing it professionally.

Here is some of Lily's work from her website:
