Parable of the Sower
So today, September 20, I went to the artist lunch talk featuring Stanley Rayfield. I absolutely love his work and think it is really inspiring that he's been so successful and wasn't even a good artist in high school. It is really interesting that he's reached such peak success even after starting his artistic journey relatively later in life compared to the rest of us. There were a couple of things that he said that really resonated with me. Firstly I really like the details he added to the Governor's portrait- I think they demonstrate the creative ways you can work in personal information into a formal portrait without simply writing it overtop- specifically, I really liked the inclusion of information on the book spines. Secondly I really liked the idea of him choosing faces for portraits that weren't specific- they were faces that seemed recognizable in a way and I really like that concept. I also really liked how he shared his journey of having to find what he wanted to do and how along the way, he did switch things up a bit. I really related to that and took to heart his advice of slowly introducing new work to what you've been doing instead of bouncing all around at random. I really would like to learn how to do such impressive pen and ink portraits and was especially intrigued by the hatching and cross hatching he does.
